Psychotherapy and Counseling

Ed McKinleyI am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a prior business background and over 20 years of experience providing psychotherapy and counseling as well as related services in multiple settings with a wide variety of individuals, groups, families and organizations.

Chances are if you are reading this, you or someone you know and care about is struggling with any number of issues. Depression, anxiety, addictions to alcohol or other drugs – even just a general sense of discontentment with life. You have probably been living with these feelings for quite some time in hope that each day will bring more ease. You may have considered seeing a therapist and maybe others have suggested talking to a professional, but you may be stuck with the idea that mental health and emotional issues are a “weakness” or even a “moral” issue.

Let’s face it…if it were a simple matter of “pulling ourselves up by our proverbial bootstraps,” or just “willing” ourselves into a better frame of mind or life experience….we would.

Their are many possible reasons why you or a loved one seem unable to make changes on their own and just as many possible solutions.

These pages are intended to assist you in making the best possible decision in finding the best possible fit for your particular needs. Finding the right professional to help you sort out and resolve whatever challenges you face should be fairly simple, but often, for many reasons it is not. I try to be available to anyone in need of direction whether that results in your becoming a client or not.

The terms psychotherapy and counseling are often used interchangeably. Counseling is a broader term that may often involve shorter term work designed to sort out a particular issue or circumstance in your life. It may be helpful to understand a little about the difference between psychotherapy and counseling in making an informed decision.

Psychotherapy, on the other hand, implies the treatment of more specific mental health issues such as depressive or anxiety disorders. To refer to oneself as a psychotherapist requires a rigorous course of education and training that meets  strict licensing requirements by a state board.

As a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, I have met these standards and therefore undertake an ethical, legal and moral responsibility to ensure safe and effective treatment to the people I serve.

If, after looking at my site, as well as perhaps many others, you are still unsure or are struggling to connect with someone – please, feel free to give me a call. If I don’t think that I am the right person for you, I am happy to provide direction and/or referrals to colleagues that may be a best fit for you
